A Puzzling Statement

From The Guardian:

At the height of the breakdown in relations yesterday, one Blairite and former cabinet minister close to the discussions said: “Threatening a serving prime minister in this way borders on the unconstitutional. We are a democracy, not an autocracy living in the era of the Soviet Union circa 1956. There is no way people can be muzzled in the way the chancellor is demanding.”

Leaving aside the little fact I don’t think the chancellor has been demanding ‘people… be muzzled’ — I thought that was, rather, what the PM did today by telling people to shut up and stop rocking the boat because

I think what is important now is that we understand that it’s the interests of the country that come first and we move on

— I can’t get the analogy to work. Is Brown being cast as Krushchev to Blair’s Stalin?

Anyway, I loved ‘Threatening a serving prime minister in this way borders on the unconstitutional’. I bet that’s not what he said when Mrs Thatcher’s Chancellor cut up rough in November 1990.
