Help Hazel Blears make up her mind

Filed under: civil liberties, ID cards, Politics — notsaussure @ 1:32 pm

Via Tim Worstall, I learn that Hazel Blears MP is conducting a poll on her website to ask

Do you think everyone should carry ID cards?

Since Tim publicised it, the voting’s gone from 53% For vs 46% Against to 25% For vs 74% Against.

  1. Make that 75% against.

  2. It was 74% vs 25% when I looked; either Hazel Blears’ computer can’t count (maybe she’s using the same one with which they costed the Olympic Games) or whoever set up the survey to calculate percentages forgot to set the numbers to one or two decimal points and it’s rounded down. Excel, at least, does that if you don’t watch it like a hawk.

  3. I meant that I had voted and turned it to 75% against.

  4. Oops. My apologies — the damn thing won’t let me see what the voting is now.

  5. Blears seems to be experimenting with a sort of computerised democracy. Cityunslicker has posted on a similar theme. I say, if you aren’t up to making difficult decisions and taking responsibility for them, get out of government.

  6. So I see, and he makes a very good point. I almost had a fit when I heard about it, though I see that Chris Dillow gives it some extremely lukewarm support, so I want to have another think before I write about it. I’m most perturbed about the reference to supermarket loyalty cards; I do know a bit about them and, insofar as I can make sense of the announcement, I think they’re talking about trying to think how to sell something really quite sinister.

  7. She has it set up not to let you see the result if you voted already. We need a new voter to find out what it is now – I’ll bet 80% opposed.
