Puddlejumper, an established blogger who’s always well worth a read, has just started a new blog, THE NEWS sUcKs, in which she demonstrates she certainly knows how to establish herself with a spectacular hit rating.

And before anyone asks, I found it because there’s a link to me in the post.

  1. Cheers matey!

Will take a wee while till I have anywhere near as good content as you!

But you never answered the question posed…

Do you think we are becoming a culture of rubberneckers

    (though not us obviously, “THEM”)

  2. Why, thank you. Judging from the way you write in your personal blog, I’m really really looking forward to reading you regularly on media and politics. You might want to think about participating in Blogpower; take a look at the site and see what you think.

Anyway, to your question; this is ‘culture’ or ‘society’ in the Daily Mail sense of the term, I suspect — something that other people do, but certainly not us or many people we know!

More seriously, how would one know? The internet, reality TV and so forth have certainly made gratifying idle and prurient curiosity a lot easier than it might have been in earlier times, but I wouldn’t want to commit myself on whether people, in general, have become more likely to be rubberneckers. The Dickens extracts to which you kindly linked certainly suggest — as, of course, do other accounts — that a public execution used to be considered a good day out if that’s the sort of thing you liked, and I can’t imagine that had you given, 50 or 100 years ago, large numbers of teenage boys and young men ready access to images of a noted actress of the day having a lingerie accident similar that suffered by Ms Spears that the results would have been much different — a fair old number would have wanted a look, surely?

You might, by the way, be amused by Jon Swift’s explanations of some of his Google searches.

  3. Have emailed the blogpower guys and just waiting for the code.

Pretty interesting. I liked the google thing too.

    And thanks for the compliment.

Its nice to think other enjoy my writing.

PS your plug has certainly sent them over. I’m on the Growing Blog list already.

Shame we can’t reach that many people without resorting to manipulative tactics though ;-)
