Comment moderation

Filed under: Uncategorized — notsaussure @ 9:16 pm

Apologies, but I’m coming under a sustained spam attack at the moment and, while the Akismet  filter is picking most things up, a not inconsiderable number of comments about barely legal teens and the like are getting through.

I’ve therefore turned moderation on, but will check frequently to approve things.   I hope to be able to turn it back off soon.

  1. Install Bad Behaviour. It stops the spam bots at source. Since installing it, I’ve had very few get through to Akismet. Something else you can do is install auto moderation and auto comment off plugins. One auto moderates after a set period of inactivity and the other switches off the comments of a post after a set period of time. Spammers target old posts in the hope that you won’t notice.

  2. Oh, yes, nearly forgot – in your WordPress admin page you can set comments with links in to auto moderation.

  3. Thanks. I’ve identified a couple of .php scripts that’ll automatically turn comment moderation on (or comments off altogether) for older posts, but since this is a free blog I’m not sure I’m able to install them on the server. I’ve posted a question in the forum to find out.

The spam-storm seems to have subsided now, so I’ve turned comments back on to see what happens.
