I suppose everything’s quietened down while Sunny does his interview with Paul Delaire Staines; in the meantime, here’s the full gen on the senior Minister and the extra-large pencil sharpener.
Whatever the outcome of all this, I don’t think that the allegations, even if they are true, are going to do Guido one half so much damage as has his immediate recourse to threats about libel lawyers, given both his stated dislike of the laws of libel and the efforts to which he’s gone to remove himself from their jurisdiction. By announcing in his blog that he’d ‘issued legal notices’ and then, presumably realising this wasn’t really in keeping with his brand image as a courageous anarchic libertarian mischief-maker, removing the post he didn’t do himself many favours, at least not that I can see.
Not that I know the people involved other than through their writing, but I’m pretty sure that Sunny, Chicken Yoghurt and Tim Ireland would have taken down the offending posts without the threat of legal action and on the simple assurance that Mr Staines would show them the journalist’s retraction (that no one seems to have seen as yet) as soon as he returned to his office, particularly given that much of Tim Ireland’s beef against him is that he doesn’t afford people a proper right of reply.
That’s what I’d have done in his position, anyway, at least in the first instance; if at first you don’t succeed, then turn nasty. That way you normally get the same result but you come out of it looking better.
